PEC 3 site soil experiment excavated a 18” x 12” x 6” hole and sifted the material dry using ASTM D6913-04(2009)e1 to determine soil particle sizes and each particle size amount was weighed. The material was then soaked and filtered through a jersey fabric to determine clay particles. That clay was dried and weighed and amount of clay found compared to dry sifting. Clay was then added to arrive at a 30% clay mix and material was poured into a fabric form of 18” x 12” x 6” hung from a wooden structure. PEC 3 took place at the Open Space Visitor’s Center in Albuquerque on Coors Road. Passersby could view the sifting and sorting processes ongoing and the final piece allows for viewers to see into the excavation by protecting it with an acrylic sheet.
